Adapters in the SOA world

In this tip, David Lithicum discusses whether adapters have become obsolete in the SOA community.

I've had a few vendors approach me about adapters recently and I'm wondering whether, in your opinion, adapters have become an obsolete concept in an SOA world?

No. Most systems do not provide Web services interfaces, thus adapters are still required. As time goes on, hopefully we'll use fewer adapters, but for now 80-90 percent of the systems require them to translate their proprietary interfaces to something the integration/SOA technology can understand.
