Adaptors in a SOA world

David Lithicum discusses the continuing importance of adaptors in a SOA environment.

I've had a few vendors approach me about adapters recently and I'm wondering whether, in your opinion, adapters have become an obsolete concept in an SOA world?

No way. Most of the interfaces out there are proprietary, and as such need adapters to talk to these proprietary protocols. Even when the interfaces are "service-oriented" there still needs to be a mechanism to account for both the differences in how they stand up Web services (vendors implement them differently), as well as application semantics.
