Does the XML 1.0 specify a maximum size for an XML identifier?

Does the XML 1.0 specify a maximum size for an XML identifier? For instance, many programming environments specify that identifiers are only unique to some length, like 256 characters.
No. Identifiers can, in theory, be arbitrarily long. It is a good idea to keep them within reasonable limits as there may be limits imposed by the systems XML flows through such as database engines, stylesheet engines and so on.
