Given the lack of support for transactionality in the current Web services specification, does it mean I have to implement it myself? What happens when one transactions spans multiple platforms i.e AS/400, Unix and MS? Each group has to build the 2PC mechanism?
This depends on the SOAP implementation you use. Some implementations support transactions. Other don't. Since the specs don't support transactions, interoperability generally doesn't work. There's a new spec in development at OASIS called Business Transaction Protocol (BTP) which will address cross-platform transactions.
