How can I build a search engine to query information in a Java-based FAQ?

I am developing a Web site using both XML and HTML. I wanted to know how I can get my Web site to have a search engine based on the information held by the Web site which is FAQ in Java programming! I thought I had to use the XML to query a database or use Xquery or what? I am in a dead end.
If you are storing the data in a DB, the easiest thing to do would be to use one that supports full text search.

An alternative is to turn your XML into HTML programmatically and spider the HTML.
