Is there a way to patch arbitrary transformation logic into an XSL template?

I'm looking for technologies to help me write a pattern processor. I am seriously considering basing the 'engine' on XSL. However the available node transformation logic seems limited. Is there any way to patch in arbitrary transformation logic (say written as a Java class) into an XSL template?
Not without serious hacking I suspect. I'd suggest you would be better off looking at pipeline transformation processing for example:
http://xpipe.sourceforge.net.
