Microsoft environment for application servers

In a LEAD story of yesterday's middleware newsletter there was this sentence:

"Web services competition heats up."
Web services offerings from IBM and Microsoft aren't the only games in town. Application server vendors such as Sybase, SilverStream and BEA Systems are venturing into the Web services space. https://searchmicroservices.techtarget.com/

My question is: Which Microsoft technology is an environment for an application server solution?

Microsoft does not distinguish an application server in their products. You accomplish application server functionality with their operating system, and at one point they proclaimed that Windows NT was an application server.
