Agility, a useful concept, has also become a widely applied buzzword. In fact, "agility" and "lean" sometimes get mentioned in the context of discovery and modernization projects for the famously stout mainframe platform.
Why? Venkan Patil, a vice president and practice head for Enterprise Technology Modernization at InfoSys says that with so many kinds of legacy systems around that need migrating, enterprises are always interested in looking at more innovative strategies to obtain optimal value.
Still, when it comes to taking a more agile approach to discovery, Patil relies on trusted commercial tools. “We typically use SEEC and Relativity (now a Microfocus company) for our analysis, and we have looked at Evolveware, SML and Software Mining but were not convinced about their capabilities,” he says.
He says his organization has tried some of the tools in the open source space but has not had much success, although the Eclipse open source development environment and its available plugins in many cases have proven more useful. In fact, several commercial mainframe discovery and modernization tools support Eclipse as a backplane for talking with other tools in an enterprise tool suite.
