IBM Cloud Orchestrator v2.5 -- formerly IBM SmartCloud Orchestrator -- enables organizations to coordinate the automated deployment of on-premises data center resources, cloud-enabled business processes and cloud services. It allows IT staff to create, maintain and reuse infrastructure, middleware and application templates across heterogeneous environments -- whether automating just one business process or the entire data center. Templates are used to eliminate manual scripting, provide building blocks for standardizing processes and to create repeatability.
Cloud Orchestrator is a complete orchestration offering that automates the integration of management tools, business systems and compliance applications that are required to move software into production. It is built on open standards, including OpenStack and community-provided best practices, for ease of adoption into existing environments.
IBM Cloud Orchestrator supports three tiers of cloud management services. The first is infrastructure services, which integrate configuration, provisioning, resource allocation and capacity monitoring across heterogeneous environments. The second tier is platform services, which simplify deployment and lifecycle management of middleware and application patterns, ideally with support of the Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) standard. The third tier consists of orchestration services that automate the setup and deployment of IT tasks, as well as specific cloud-deployed business processes by leveraging existing skills, processes and technology artifacts -- ideally with support of the Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration.
Cloud Orchestrator is supported by APIs and tooling extensions, which enable organizations to customize cloud services to meet their unique needs. It also can deploy multi-node applications, as well as servers, so organizations can choose whether to pay for licensing from a third-party vendor or use the open-source OpenStack technology to manage their infrastructure.
IT staff can use prebuilt templates -- including the Chef automation platform, IBM PureApplication System, IBM Power Systems, IBM System z and SoftLayer 5 -- to help automate the provisioning, configuration and lifecycle management of cloud resources. This allows administrators to coordinate isolated tasks across heterogeneous compute, storage and network domains.
IBM Cloud Orchestrator comes with access to the IBM services marketplace, which contains a set of ready-to-use automation packages that contains more than 250 templates and a "single pane of glass" to design and deploy services, monitor capacity and performance, control updates and migrations, and recover unused resources, as needed. A self-service portal enables end users to request services directly and comes with tools, such as network devices, firewall rules and load balancer policies for service deployment.
Cloud Orchestrator also provides a single interface for monitoring cloud health and performance. IT staff can monitor both virtual and physical infrastructure -- including network and storage resources, the lifecycle of cloud services and automate change management -- and leverage an integrated approach to service management that links service requests to asset and change management.
Cost management features also are available to display chargeback costs for the managed technology. And organizations can apply policy-driven workload placement to optimize performance and security.
