Dynamic e-business using Web service workflow

Web services will be a critical component in the business plans of corporations as it offers the potential for creating highly dynamic and versatile distributed applications that span technological and business boundaries. One of the revolutionary concepts made possible by the Internet is "electronic value chains". However, enterprises face a daunting challenge when integrating different value chains from different corporations. A Web service workflow has the potential to successfully integrate value chains and opens the door to dynamic e-business collaborations. In this article I will discuss how dynamic e-business can be achieved by applying Electronic Business XML (ebXML) standards to Web service workflow for meeting real world business demands.

The ebXML Message Service extends the SOAP protocol by adding layered frameworks that support attachment, security and reliable delivery. It allows payloads of different types - for example, XML documents, binary data, or EDI messages. This permits businesses to use the latest technology while also allowing them to leverage their existing infrastructure. The ebXML Message Service delivers a level of reliability that guarantees at most one copy of a message is sent to the recipient and confirms receipt. This level of reliability is not possible with most standards available today. The service can operate over any transport, such as SMTP or HTTP. This permits corporations of all sizes to participate in global electronic commerce at low cost.

Web service workflow - automating e-business collaboration
The ability to define and implement activity within workflow in the form of a Web service augments the capability of a workflow to address challenges in integrating different value chains from different corporations. A CPP profile allows a corporation to define its capabilities in terms of business context and the technical aspects of engagement. CPA enforces a service provider to correctly fulfill the requirements of implementing the Web service, or set of Web services, that correspond to a defined business activity. A workflow provides the automation benefits to efficiently execute the business collaborations defined for a business process.

One to many collaboration chains
The Internet has made it easier for businesses to participate in not just one-to-one collaborations but in one-to-many collaborations as value chains become accessible electronically. Universal Description, Discovery & Integration (UDDI) along with the workflow functionality of allowing user-defined rules provides the ability to dynamically locate and bind to Web service providers that best fit a corporation's business needs. Only the Web service providers that have implemented a specified role detailed by its CPP and having a CPA agreement are eligible to dynamically collaborate.
