Less budget for maintenance means more for innovation

Source:  IBM

IBM has spearheaded efforts for years to create easy to maintain systems. It is not wholly benevolent: The cost of labor maintaining old systems is the biggest one IT shops face – it takes off the table money that could go to new innovation. The latest take on autonomics or utility computing takes the form of the PureSystems appliance. Is this an answer to Oracle’s appliance incursions? No, says Software Group General Manager Steve Mills, shown above (at left). The PureSystems effort predates Oracle’s entry into hardware, and it arises from customers’ needs. Said Mills: “Our customers were spending an ever larger percent of their budget on the people side.”
