Django and Node.js are two popular open source framework options capable of meeting the needs of web and mobile developers. Each one is unique, however, and the choice between Django vs. Node.js will mainly come down to the requirements of your project. As an event-driven framework, requests in Node.js are put on an event loop, processed, and then delegated appropriately. This allows the application and services to handle multiple requests at once, which is a huge plus for distributed application systems.
  • Robust package repositories. The Node Package Manager (NPM) repository provides hundreds of thousands of development packages developers can browse for the specific functions, features and components needed for their particular project. Developers can also employ NPM tools that help publish projects, streamline package installation, manage versions and control dependencies.
  • Simple database design. When developing databases, programmers don't have to declare a strict schema and they can more easily convert database entries into JavaScript objects to simplify data access.
  • Async process support. The async.hooks module found in Node.js provides an API that registers calls and tracks asynchronous requests made across Node.js applications. The framework also provides scalability by allowing developers to access clusters of modules and run multiple instances of an application inside one machine.

Drawbacks of Node.js

For all its established benefits, Node.js still carries its share of concerning drawbacks as well:

  • Data processing limits. While Node.js is effective at handling asynchronous processes, its code still follows single threaded execution. This makes it precarious to use for heavy, long-running CPU tasks or machine learning programs, since it's likely that parallel code processing will block servers.
