Trends in database and mainframe legacy modernization

Legacy database, application and mainframe modernization projects are evolving from mega to modular, according to Red Hat Inc. services delivery manager Emily Brand and JBoss' director of product line management Jason Andersen. At Red Hat Summit 2013 in Boston, June 11 to 14, the experts sat down with SearchSOA to discuss application modernization's evolution from mega to modular and server-side to services.

"One of the major trends is trying to create everything in services," Brand said. "Think of your database as a service. Think instead of having these monolithic applications that are based on mainframes [and] trying to break those pieces off to make them all individual services."

Andersen noted a shift in the way people are thinking about performing database and mainframe legacy modernization projects.

"It used to be that with middleware, people would do large migrations. They would take technology and say, 'I have this technology, but I want to move it to a new technology.' By turning it to more of a service-orientation, they are able to leverage what they already have," he said.
